Grades K5 - 4
The curriculum of HHCA is built upon national and state aligned standards and benchmarks. In order to support the curriculum, a variety of textbooks are used by the teachers at each grade level along with resources necessary to provide an enriched learning environment for every student. Through the use of a special computer assisted program called Measures of Academic Progress each student is assessed two times per year in the major subject areas. These assessments measure entry-level content, knowledge and skills and project individual student instructional goals to be achieved by the end of the year. The information derived from these assessments is used by the teachers to plan classroom lesson content and ensure teaching effectiveness. Students in K-2 enjoy a hands-on math program through Everyday Math followed in grades 3-4 with math kits to supplement the text. Students in grades 2-4 assess mathematics’ skills weekly using Accelerated/Star Math. Students love this program as it allows them to work at their own pace and grade their own work with the help of an in class scanner. Lower school students all focus on writing skills from K-4 with Six Traits of Writing. As students enter third grade and above, they may also use Six Traits through our new computer link to Six Traits PowerWrite. Using this program, teachers may assign portfolio work to be completed online with Six Traits assistance for each student. At the close of a school year, students and teachers choose five assignments to be kept in the online portfolio for each student. All lower school students enjoy Reading Street language arts and Purposeful Design Science lessons. Students at HHCA are provided an excellent education through a variety of resources made available to them. The progress made is then tracked to ensure success for each student. Measured progress and the achievement of performance goals helps both teacher and parent in understanding how their student is progressing and what must be done to prepare them for the next grade level.
