Middle and upper school students have many opportunities to use their dramatic gifts for the glory of God. Each student is encouraged to find his or her area of interest and to sharpen that skill whether it be in a ministry team, back stage, the technical aspect or performing onstage. It is our belief that drama offers many venues for students to learn self-confidence, peer cooperation, and performance skills. The drama department encompasses grades 5-12.  There are several opportunities for students to participate in the program. These opportunities include:

Our students are often seen performing in Island drama opportunities such as the Self Family Arts Center or the Main Street Youth Theatre.

Faculty

Mrs. Rhonda Stones, Fine Arts Director
Mrs. Stones, HHCA Dramatic Arts Program Director, is a graduate of Southern Wesleyan University and Clemson University with the degrees of BA and MA. Mrs. Stones serves as a middle school English teacher at HHCA. She has directed drama productions at HHCA for 19 years. In addition to full-length productions for the middle and upper school at HHCA, Mrs. Stones sponsors the ministry teams. She currently serves as music director of First Baptist Church of Garden City where she directs several choirs, including the youth choir as well as assists the youth director. She has directed a performing arts camp for the Stateline Baptist Assembly and serves on the board of the Savannah River Camp, directing a performing arts camp called Synthesis for grades 5-12.

Mr. Dick Sanders, Technical Director
Mr. Sanders, a middle and upper school science teacher at HHCA, supervises set design and construction, lighting and sound. Mr. Sanders has worked in technical theater since junior high school for children's community theater, and professional theater. Locally he has assisted with productions for the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Main Street Youth Theatre, and First Baptist Church of Hilton Head.

Ms. Michelle McElroy, Middle School Drama
Ms. McElroy is an integral part of the middle school drama program at HHCA. Along with teaching middle school social studies, she directs the middle school one-act play for competition, helps coordinate ministry teams and serves as assistant director of the middle school play. Ms. McElroy has experience working with a number of theatre groups, both on stage and behind the scences. She coordinated fine-arts ministry teams at North Georgia College and State University for two years along with writing and directing two full length plays for the Baptist Student Union.

Opportunities

One Act Plays
The middle school and upper school One-Act Play targets students who have a love for theater or performance, and who desire to sharpen their acting skills. Participants work through the process of performing a dramatic piece for competition in a small, hands-on setting. As part of the process, students learn to appreciate concepts such as the actor's point of view and terminology related to theater and stage. This experience should help students better understand the demands of rehearsal and performance as well as aid in developing confidence, discipline and success. Students travel in January to compete against other regional SCISA schools and travel to the state competition in the event that they place first in their region.

Middle School Play
The middle school play is an extensive play or musical that is presented annually. Auditions are open to all MS students, however, all students interested in participation are utilized in one form or another. Students create and paint sets, control lights and soundboard as well as assist backstage. The selected play is presented nightly for several performances and usually includes a Saturday matinee.

His Hands
This ministry team is a sign language team comprised of middle school students. This team interprets a contemporary Christian song through sign language. This is presented in chapels and retreats. His Hands has been invited to preform at senior adult homes and other volunteer ministry opportunities.

Mystery
This is a new ministry team that began in the 2008-09 school year. This exciting ministry team is composed of middle school students who learn to dramatically interpret a Christian song using their hands as well as white ribbons. The students wear white gloves and the song is presented in total darkness under black lights. This is a riveting opportunity to share the gospel and it has been used in various places such as chapel and retreats.

Reflections
This ministry is an interpretive dance team. The students are instructed in a mixture of sign language and ballet to visually interpret a Christian song to its audience. The fifth through eighth grade students perform during chapel, retreats, or other community opportunities.

Kingdom Characters
This exciting, energetic and vivacious team performs spiritual truths through comedic drama. They also present silent drama. These students present dramas without speech but clearly display the theme through facial expressions and exaggerated movements. This team often performs with white face clown makeup.

Short Skits
Middle and upper school students often perform short skits to illustrate a theme or truth through drama. These skits are presented in chapels or during the two retreats.

Upper School Play
The upper school play or musical is an extensive play that is presented annually. Auditions are open to all US students, however, depending on the size of the cast there may be a limited number of students that are able to participate. It is a priority of the drama department to utilize as many students as possible whether it be on stage or backstage. The upper school drama is presented at the Visual and Performing Arts Center at the Hilton Head High School.

Evening of the Arts
This is an evening set aside for students to share their gifts through music, drama, dance, and art. It is a rare opportunity for middle and upper school students to perform together.
