You’re in for BIG fun at HHCA’s Spring Musical!

Hilton Head Christian Academy’s Upper School Drama Department is proud to present Big, the Musical on March 18, 19 and 20th at 7 p.m. at the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the campus of Hilton Head High School.  Under the direction of Rhonda Stones, this  musical version of the 1987 hit motion picture, which starred Tom Hanks,  features 33  HHCA actors and actresses  and an energetic, heartfelt musical score by David Shire and Richard Maltby, Jr. (“Baby,” “Starting Here, Starting Now”).  For the first time ever, the musical score will be performed “live” during the performance by an HHCA combo under the direction of James Berry.  The contemporary dance numbers feature dynamic choreography by Beverly Serral.

As a kid, who hasn’t wished that he was older, more experienced… big? Well that’s exactly what Josh Baskin (Michael Hull), a frustrated adolescent, wishes as he inserts his coin into the ancient, magic Zoltar carnival machine.  The next morning, to his horror, Josh wakes up to find that he has become an adult… overnight!

Thus ensues, a witty, touching, and insightful musical journey as Josh discovers, with the help of his best friend Billy (J.D. Meeder), that there is much more to being an adult than he bargained for.

While his parents (Heather Oliver and Devin McGuinness) fear he has been kidnapped, Josh actually finds himself in Manhattan’s premier toy store, explaining to storeowner George MacMillan (Ryan Atwood) how to put the “fun” back into toys.  When he is hired to work at MacMillan Toys, Josh must navigate a whole new world filled with a competitive, disgruntled coworker (James Berl), and a real-life, grown-up love interest in V.P. of Marketing, Susan Lawrence (Betsy Serral).  Heartfelt lyrics in “You’re a Big Boy Now,” and the energetic production number, “The Time of Your Life,” effectively underscore Josh’s emotional roller-coaster, and give the entire cast a time to shine.

This fun, fast-moving show bursts onto stage in a “big” way,   and will have you laughing, crying, and tapping your feet as Josh “comes of age” as only a 13-year-old can!

Tickets are $8 for students and seniors and $12 for adults.  They are available at Hilton Head Christian Academy between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. daily or prior to performances at the VPAC.  For further ticket information, or to reserve tickets, call the school at 681-2878.
