HHCA 5TH GRADE TRIP | MARCH 11-14, 2025

HHCA’s Class of 2032 experienced an unforgettable week in Williamsburg, Virginia, stepping back in time to explore life in colonial America through an adventure now stamped in their hearts. This beloved 5th-grade trip brings history to life, giving students the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of early American settlers and revolutionaries.

The hands-on history lesson was complete with guided tours and exploration of remarkable sites, including the 17th Century Jamestown Settlement, where students discovered the challenges and triumphs of America’s first permanent English colony. The recreation of the settlement helped students imagine what it might have been like to live in Jamestown during the 17th century.  At the Yorktown Battlefield, they stood where the final major battle of the American Revolution took place and gained a deeper understanding of our nation’s fight for independence. Students also visited the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, where interactive exhibits and engaging displays provided a vivid picture of the Revolutionary era.

In Historic Williamsburg, students explored historic exhibition buildings, colonial trade shops, and homes that vividly showcased daily life in the 18th century. A highlight of the trip was the magnificent Governor’s Palace, where they marveled at the elegance and grandeur of colonial leadership. They also enjoyed a 3-hour guided tour of Colonial Williamsburg, offering an in-depth and engaging look at the historic town’s most iconic landmarks. Visits to Bassett Hall, the charming home of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and his wife Abby, provided insight into the restoration efforts that preserved Williamsburg’s historic beauty.

Evening adventures included the always-memorable Early American Medical Practices program, which has been a trip highlight for HHCA students for the past 10 years. Students also enjoyed Colonial Dance, an evening program in Historic Williamsburg which introduced them to different types of popular dances in the 18th century, along with the role of dance in 18th century society.

Beyond the historical sites, the journey was filled with memorable moments—from the charter bus trip and ferry ride to shared meals, prayers and an evening devotional to end each day.

This 5th-grade trip is one of the long-standing and cherished traditions that defines the HHCA experience, helping to build life-long friendships and memories.

None of this would be possible without an amazing group of mentors, parent volunteers, and community partners who support and enrich this journey. Special thanks go to 5th Grade Mentors Mrs. Cherry and Mrs. Lehman, whose dedication to students and to teaching have made the Williamsburg trip an extraordinary experience for the past 10 years!

I am so happy that the Class of 2032 is returning home with lasting memories and minds enriched by history. The lessons and laughter shared in Williamsburg will undoubtedly remain with them for years to come.
