School Nurse

For the 2020-2021 school year, are excited to welcome Jen Bowen to HHCA as our new school nurse.

Jen is a Registered Nurse and has 13 years of nursing experience in many settings, including most recently at M.C. Riley Elementary School in Bluffton, as well as hospital experience (labor and delivery) and public health. With her experience and education (a degree from the Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University), Jen will be a valued member of the HHCA team.  She will be on campus full-time each day.

HHCA's Health & Safety Team

HHCA has also assembled a dedicated Health and Safety Team for the 2020-2021 school year. The team will continue to monitor medical updates and guide policies, protocols and planning.
The Health and Safety Team includes:
Doug Langhals, Head of School
Rachel Bagenstose, CFO/HR Director
Tabatha DeWitt, Director of Technology
Parker Collins, Academic Dean
Steve Bryant, Director of Security
Jen Bowen, School Nurse

We have added an isolation area in the back of the nurse’s office for any student who begins experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.  This will allow privacy and isolation for students exhibiting symptoms while parents are contacted. Upon notification by the school nurse that your student is experiencing symptoms, you are asked to pick up your student at the gate by the café. Students will be accompanied by an HHCA faculty or staff member to meet their parents at the gate.

Students who may need to take medications at school will need to do so through the nurse's office. Parents should send in medications along with a completed Medication Administration form. Students are not allowed to carry any type of medication, even over-the-counter medications with them during the school day. Parents can also give permission for the nurse to administer over-the-counter meds as needed. For a complete list of these, click here. Please make sure the nurse is aware of any medications your child may be taking at home; as this may impact the evaluation and treatment that is needed at school.

Please notify Mrs. Higgs at our front desk when your child is not feeling well and will be absent from school. If you have specific questions about your child's return to school after being ill, please refer to the return to school policy below and the COVID-19 guidelines as outlined in the Vision 2020: Back To School plan HERE.  Nurse Bowen is happy to answer any questions as well. You can email her or call the school at 843-681-2878,

The health of all our students, faculty and staff is important at HHCA. In order to minimize the spread of viral and bacterial illnesses, HHCA has a 24 Hour Free Policy. Students should be fever, vomiting and diarrhea free for a minimum of 24 hours without medication prior to returning to school. Please help us keep everyone healthy by keeping your child at home when they are ill.

Students must be lice and nit free in order to attend school. Students who are found to have lice or nits will be sent home for treatment and removal. After treatment upon returning to school, a parent or guardian must accompany their child to health office for a lice check prior to the student returning to classes. In lieu of coming to the health office for a lice check, families also have the option to present documentation of professional lice treatment.

All rising 6th-12th grade students are required to obtain a physical and complete a Physical Packet as part of enrollment and prior to the first day of school, regardless of whether they plan to participate in a sport. Physicals must be performed by a physician, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant. HHCA will keep a copy of the physical on file for the duration of the school year.  You can download the pre-participation physical form from the sidebar or this page, or log into the student's Magnus account
