SASS 1 & SASS 2
These sessions are both full! Mr. Bryant has personally talked with many of the girls participating, and they are excited about the training whether it is their first time taking SASS 1 or they are returning for SASS 2.
Please remind girls to arrive 15 minutes early to check in.
If you have not already signed and returned the required waiver, please print it here, sign it, and either email it to Mr. Bryant or leave it with Ms. Higgs at the front desk before Saturday's class.
Both sessions run concurrently and will last the entire four hours. Participants spend two hours with SASS GO instructors Lisa, Brett, and Shannon and the other half of the time with Mr. Bryant.
They will be trained physically and mentally for the most common threats to their safety, including physical attacks, harassment, and sexual assault.
During their time with Mr. Bryant, they will discuss (in detail):
- improving their situational awareness
- safety in numbers
- parking lot/parking garage safety
- social media boundaries
- protection against stalking
- escaping abusive relationships
They'll also discuss college campus safety to include:
- dorm room security
- drink spiking and date rape drugs & trends
- parties; social gatherings; and Greek life
They will take a look at and learn from recent attacks, victims, and cases including taking an in depth look at the recent Idaho University student attacks.
They will learn the pros and cons of commonly carried personal safety devices, including pepper spray, stun guns, and personal alarms. They will actually use inert (water based) pepper spray and run thru common scenarios that predators use to lure, distract, or catch them off guard.
NOTE: This entire four-hour block is paramount in giving them real life and current skills, knowledge, and confidence to protect themselves in differing scenarios. Some of the material by its very nature is somewhat graphic and will be discussed in detail.
Other topics discussed will be avoiding risky behaviors and setting boundaries and maintaining safe zones to help avoid being put into positions or situations where their safety or health could be jeopardized.
Participants will be given SASS GO t-shirts that they can officially wear as part of their school uniform.
Lastly, as almost all of the returning girls have so politely requested (or rather demanded!): we will have lots of food and ice cream for them after class. Mr. Bryant says this is his “bribe” for them for dragging them back to campus on a Saturday night!
