Digging Into Discovery: God’s Amazing Decomposers

Third graders explored God’s design for creation through a hands-on study of one of nature’s most important recyclers—worms!

Hilton Head Christian Academy third graders recently got their hands dirty—literally—during a fascinating, hands-on project titled Worms: God’s Amazing Decomposers. This interactive learning experience gave students an up-close look at how worms help keep God’s creation thriving. By burrowing and breaking down organic matter, these small but mighty creatures play a vital role in recycling nutrients and keeping soil healthy.

Students began by reading books and stories about worms, discovering how they live, move, and help plants grow. Each student then created a Worm Journal to record daily observations, note worm behaviors, and reflect on what they were learning. Along the way, they practiced research, comprehension, and writing skills—all while learning to appreciate God’s intricate design in nature.

This project helped students see that God’s creation works together with purpose, even in the smallest details. By caring for and observing their worms, students were able to connect science and faith in a tangible, memorable way.

By the end of the project, students had developed not only scientific knowledge but also a new sense of wonder for the way God sustains life through His creation. 🪱And the best part? Each student got to take home their new “classroom composting companions” to continue their learning at home!
