From Habitats to Storytelling

Third graders at Hilton Head Christian Academy are bringing reading, science, and social studies together through an engaging project about habitats. After reading folktales and realistic fiction, students connected those stories to what they were learning about geography, ecosystems, and the ways plants and animals depend on each other. Working with a partner, they chose a habitat to explore--researching its climate, geography, plants, and animals.

Next, students will choose one animal from their habitat to study more closely. They’ll gather facts about how the animal lives and survives, then use that knowledge to write their own stories featuring the animals they’ve researched.

I love that this project helps students realize that reading, science, and social studies all work together. They see how God’s creation is connected, and it makes learning more meaningful and fun.

By combining research, teamwork, and creative writing, third graders are not only practicing important academic skills but also developing curiosity and appreciation for the world God created.
