HHCA’s Courtney Hays Named DAR's South Carolina Outstanding Teacher of American History

The HHCA community is celebrating an incredible honor bestowed upon one of its beloved Upper School mentors. Courtney Hays has been recognized by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) as South Carolina's 2025 Outstanding Teacher of American History.

Ms. Hays received this prestigious award at a special ceremony in Columbia on March 21, 2025. DAR’s Outstanding Teacher of American History Contest honors exceptional educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching history to students in grades 5-12.

Teachers are selected based on their incisive knowledge of American history, dedication to their students, commitment to high academic standards, and ability to connect history to modern life.

Mrs. Hays first won at the local level, representing the Emily Geiger Chapter of the South Carolina DAR, before advancing to DAR's statewide contest, where she was named the South Carolina winner.

Deeply honored by this recognition, she shared in her acceptance speech:

Teaching history has shown me that true patriotism isn’t just about sacrifice but perseverance. From the Daughters of Liberty to Robert Smalls, history is full of those who fought for a future they might never see. Their stories fuel my passion for teaching.

But just as important are my students' stories. Meeting them where they are, valuing their experiences, and building real relationships have been the key to my success in the classroom. History is personal, and when students see themselves in the past, they feel empowered to shape the future.

I am grateful to carry these lessons forward every day, ensuring that history is not just remembered—but lived.”
