Imagination Unleashed: Creating Wild Things in 4th Grade

After reading Where the Wild Things Are, fourth graders brought their own imaginative creatures to life through art, storytelling, and inquiry.

Hilton Head Christian Academy fourth graders took a walk on the wild side in art class as they explored creativity, imagination, and storytelling inspired by the beloved book Where the Wild Things Are.

After reading the story together, students designed their own “wild thing” characters, thinking deeply about what makes each creation unique. From there, they stretched their imaginations even further—dreaming up entirely new characters and asking questions like: What’s my creature’s name? Where do they live? What do they do?

To bring their ideas to life, each student created a mask and an illustration showing their character in action. As they worked, the classroom buzzed with excitement, collaboration, and colorful creativity. The project blended inquiry, literacy, and artistic expression—showing students that asking questions and thinking creatively are at the heart of discovery.

It was so much fun to see the creative process at work—the imagination and attention to detail were amazing. The students didn’t just make art; they built stories, asked thoughtful questions, and brought their ideas to life.
