Patriots Point Field Trip Brings History to Life for HHCA 10th Graders

Students in HHCA's 10th-grade Modern World History class recently stepped out of the classroom and into history with a visit to Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, a premier historical site in Charleston, situated on the Charleston Harbor.

Patriots Point is home to the legendary USS Yorktown, an Essex-class aircraft carrier that played a vital role in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The museum also features the USS Laffey, a destroyer that survived multiple kamikaze attacks, and the USS Clamagore, a Cold War-era submarine.

As part of the 10th-grade study of World War II and the Vietnam War, students explored the vast decks of the USS Yorktown to learn about the ship’s operations, key battles, and the daily lives of the sailors who served aboard. Through interactive exhibits, they had an up-close look at the bravery and sacrifices of those who served and gained firsthand insight into the conditions sailors faced.

HHCA's Assistant Director of Security and military veteran Ron Peduzzi served as a trip chaperone along with Dr. Bolds. Reflecting on the significance of the experience, Coach Peduzzi shared:

Understanding the sacrifices made by those who served is essential to truly appreciating our nation’s history. Seeing these exhibits firsthand gives students a deeper respect for the courage and dedication of our veterans.

Students also visited the Vietnam Experience Exhibit, a fully immersive display designed to bring the realities of the Vietnam War to life. Walking through recreated encampments, seeing authentic military equipment, and learning about the harsh jungle conditions, the class gained a deeper appreciation for soldiers' challenges.

Its such a special experience seeing history come to life for these kids. We can learn all we want in the classroom, but what an added blessing to be able to touch, live, and walk in the footsteps of those who lived it!"

- Dr. Tori Bolds, HHCA 10th Grade History Mentor

At HHCA, we believe in the power of experiential learning to inspire curiosity and deepen understanding. Opportunities like these make education both meaningful and memorable.

Thank you, Dr. Bolds!
