Student Spotlight: Murrey MacDonald Competes in International Academic Competition

Armed with a passion for world geography and a wealth of knowledge on the subject, HHCA fourth-grader Murrey MacDonald recently competed in the International Academic Competition’s Regional Finals in Columbia, South Carolina — placing first in his age group in a fast-paced World Geography competition.

In addition to his first-place finish, Murrey also earned a high score on the United States Geography Exam. His strong performance in both events qualified him for two exciting opportunities: the IAC National Competition in Orlando in May and the IAC International Competition in Thailand in July.

While the International Academic Competition (IAC) offers contests in subjects such as history and science, geography is where Murrey’s passion truly shines. His enthusiasm for studying the countries, cultures, and features of our world is matched only by his dedication to preparing and giving his very best.

I started looking at maps in the car when I was 2. Now I have maps in my room, and I like to play map games, read maps and draw maps. I love learning about countries, states, and cities!

Murrey's mom, Sami MacDonald, shared, "We prayed before the event that God would use his giftedness to shine a light on fellow competitors and to bring glory to the all-knowing God who created him — He answered our prayers. We’re so proud of Murrey’s hard work and for being brave to try something new."

Murrey and his family are thankful for the support and encouragement of his HHCA mentors, Mrs. Atkins and Miss Bezilla, and others who have invested in him along the way.

Murrey is an inspiration to his peers and a living example of using God's gifts for His glory. Murrey not only has a passion for Geography, but also a love of the history and meaning behind the names and placement of the world's landmarks and countries.  When I met Murrey at the beginning of the year, he was thrilled to explore and discuss the maps that are displayed in our classroom. We definitely share a love for geography! I am so proud of him and look forward to seeing how God uses his talent in the future.

We look forward to seeing Murrey shine at the next IAC competition!
