Watching Wonder Unfold 🦅 Kindergarten’s Eagle Inquiry

For the past two months, Hilton Head Christian Academy Kindergarten students have been immersed in an inquiry-based study of eagles, sparked by the Hilton Head Island Land Trust live eagle cam.

In December, students began watching as the parent eagles, George and Grace, laid their eggs. When the eggs hatched just before Christmas break, the excitement only grew. After returning to school in January, students eagerly continued observing the eaglets as they grew and changed in real time.

As they watched, students began asking their own questions about eagles and their behaviors. Together, the class researched answers through books and carefully selected online resources, learning about eagle anatomy, habitats, feeding patterns, and parenting behaviors.

Students illustrated books, created eagle-themed projects, and spent intentional time observing the live cam. They were especially fascinated by how the parent eagles cared for their young.

Leo shared, “My favorite part was learning with the class and learning that the mom eagle is bigger than the dad eagle.”

Gio said, “I liked watching the dad bring fish to the babies!”

Lilly and Faye loved watching the eaglets grow, while Andi was amazed to learn that an eagle’s bones are hollow, like a straw.

Watching the students’ curiosity unfold has been the most rewarding part. They weren’t just learning facts about eagles, they were asking thoughtful questions, making observations, and discovering answers together.

Beyond science learning, students were reminded of God’s intentional design. They were in awe of how He created eagles to perfectly provide for and protect their young.

Many families even joined the experience at home, watching the live cam together and continuing the learning beyond the classroom.

🦅 HHCA Kindergarten truly has been soaring.
