From Bluffton to the National Championship: HHCA Alumnus Tucker Tevepaugh Takes the Field on College Football’s Biggest Stage

When Tucker Tevepaugh walks onto the field for the College Football National Championship, he won’t just be representing the University of Miami. He’ll be carrying with him the lessons, relationships, and preparation that began right here at Hilton Head Christian Academy.

A member of the HHCA Class of 2024 and a Bluffton native, Tucker is a punter for the University of Miami Hurricanes and part of a program competing at the highest level in college football. The moment is historic, both for Tucker and for the Lowcountry community that helped shape him.

It’s a blessing being able to represent everyone I played with and was around during my time at HHCA. Without everyone there, I couldn’t do what I’m doing now. I’m grateful to represent them on the biggest stage.

Built at HHCA

Tucker joined HHCA for his final two years of high school and quickly became a key contributor to the Eagles’ football program. A standout All-State punter, he was also a member of HHCA’s 2023 South Carolina state championship team, a season defined by preparation, discipline, and belief.

Those habits still guide him today.

“Preparation is always the biggest part of the way I handle any game,” Tucker said. “If you’re prepared for every situation, you can’t be surprised and potentially make a mistake.”

Tucker’s success is a result of his preparation and his mindset. From the moment he arrived at HHCA, he took coaching seriously, worked consistently, and held himself to a high standard.

Beyond the field, Tucker credits HHCA with equipping him for the demands of college athletics and life.

"HHCA prepared me to interact with people and learn how to navigate tough situations in the classroom and on the field,” he said. “I never felt like I made a huge jump to college because HHCA prepared me so well.”

From State Champion to Division I Football

Tucker’s path to Division I football was not instant, but it was intentional. While he always believed playing at the next level was possible, the opportunity became real the summer before his senior year, when he received his first college offer.

“Playing in the national championship still doesn’t feel real,” he said. “To be able to play on arguably the biggest stage in football is something I’m incredibly grateful for.”

Now a redshirt freshman at Miami, Tucker serves as a key member of the Hurricanes’ special teams unit, developing daily in one of the most competitive environments in college football.

"In high school, some people play football for fun," he explained. "College is different. Everyone is all in. Everyone is working toward the same goal, and that raises the standard for everything you do."

The Specialist’s Mindset

As a punter, Tucker plays a role that casual fans often overlook, but one that can quietly shape the outcome of a game.

“Most people understand how kickers can win or lose games with field goals,” he said. “What they don’t always recognize is the impact field position from punting can have. Twenty yards can completely change what a defense is able to do.”

That pressure, he says, is managed the same way it always has been.

“Practice and preparation,” Tucker said. “If you’re confident in what you’re doing and you’ve put in the time, the pressure is much less.”

Mentorship That Matters

Tucker is quick to credit the coaches who invested in him during his time at HHCA, particularly Coach Houpt and Coach Smith.

Coach Houpt played a huge role in helping me become the best athlete and football player I could be through lifting and speed training. He was also someone you could always lean on for advice. Coach Smith held me to a standard, but he also trusted me and let me play without changing who I am.

That combination of accountability, support, and opportunity is something HHCA’s athletics program strives to provide every student-athlete.

A Message for Future Eagles

For current HHCA athletes who dream of playing at the next level, Tucker’s advice is simple and direct.

“Train and do everything you can to be the best version of yourself,” he said. “But also use the resources around you. The coaches at HHCA have contacts and are willing to help. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

As he looks ahead, Tucker remains focused on growth, opportunity, and the chance to compete.

“I’m excited to keep doing what I’m doing and eventually get on the field and show everyone what I can do,” he said.

From Bluffton to the National Championship stage, Tucker Tevepaugh’s journey is a powerful reminder of what is possible when preparation meets opportunity and when student-athletes are developed with intention, support, and belief.
