HHCA ANNOUNCES NEW VARSITY COACHES

Three New HHCA Varsity Head Coaches For Growing Programs

For HHCA Athletics, the 2023-2024 was another school year marked by excellence, successes, community, and dedication to playing for an Audience of One. As shared in February, Coach JW Wilkerson will serve as the Eagles next Athletic Director effective June 1st having worked on the Athletic Leadership Team throughout the year.

As we prepare for the 2024-2025 school year and begin summer training and workouts, we are excited to announce three new head coaches that have been named to lead HHCA varsity programs next year. Coach Bryan Brown will lead Varsity Boys Basketball, Coach Jessie Shrieve will lead Varsity Girls Basketball, and Coach Jay Scarbro was named as the new Varsity Baseball Head Coach. You can read more about each of them below.

HHCA coaches are committed to helping students reach their full potential-not only in their sport, but also in life. Like our teachers, coaches are valuable mentors in the lives of students. As we continue to ensure they are equipped to make a significant impact, Coach Matt Smith will work with coaches and student athletes throughout the year in a mentorship role. He will continue to serve as an assistant varsity football coach and Humanities mentor, with the additional focus of pouring into those who lead our student athletes.

With nearly 75% of middle and upper school students participating in athletics, our coaches have a unique opportunity to serve as Christian role models to our student body. HHCA is blessed with an incredible group of coaches that are leaders and mentors who give so much to our program, each making an impact well beyond their sport.

Varsity Girls Basketball

Mrs. Jessie Shrieve has been hired as the new HHCA Varsity Girls Basketball Head Coach. Coach Shrieve has an extensive background in basketball, both as a player and a coach. Her career as a player spanned eight years of year-round basketball that included a State Championship and playing on a team that won third place at Nationals.

She has coached both girls and boys basketball for a combined 14 seasons with a proven track record of success. Perhaps more important than her knowledge and love of the game, however, is her passion for leading and mentoring young women. Building relationships and encouraging players to grow in skill, as well as spiritually and in character are top priorities.

Since 2002, after moving to the area from Indiana, Coach Shrieve and her husband Rob have attended Lowcountry Community Church. They have three children - Liz (36, married to Anthony Lucarini), Matthew (20), and Addi (17). Coach Shrieve is eager to build on such a strong foundation of success and begin making an impact as an HHCA Eagle.

Varsity Boys Basketball

Mr. Bryan Brown will move into the Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coaching role. Bryan came to HHCA several years ago to work under Coach Jason Grunkemeyer and has continued to grow tremendously as a coach. His basketball knowledge, combined with a passion to see our young men grow both in skill and in character, make him a great coach and mentor for our young men. He has a vision for building the program as a whole and leading HHCA to the next level of basketball competition.

Varsity Baseball

Mr. Jay Scarbro has been named the Varsity Baseball Head Coach. Coach Scarbro brought a wealth of baseball experience when he joined the baseball program this year. He played four years of college baseball, coached at the collegiate level for two years, and coached high school baseball for 16 years prior to coming to HHCA. His teams earned 150+ wins under his leadership as head coach. He was named 2014 AAA Coach of the Year, and has led teams to multiple district and regional championships.

Paramount to this, however, is his love for the Lord, his commitment to glorify Him both on and off the field, and his desire to build young men of character. Coach Scarbro will make an impact in the lives of many as their coach, but more importantly, as their mentor. He embodies our school's visionTo Know Christ and Make Him Known, and exemplifies the HHCA Athletics motto of playing for an Audience of One

The Scarbro family moved to Bluffton last summer when Jay accepted the position of HHCA Middle School Principal.  He and his wife Lauren have three children--GT, second grade; Reese, fifth grade; and Henley, seventh grade. They have quickly become engrained into our community, are actively involved at City Hope Church where they attend, and they love the Lowcountry.
