HHCA Conducts Planned Campus Lockdown Drill

Preparation, coordination, and continuous improvement remain central to campus safety

At Hilton Head Christian Academy (HHCA), preparedness is not something we assume. It is something we practice.

With that commitment in mind, HHCA conducted a planned campus lockdown drill on Thursday, February 12, 2026, as part of an ongoing, multifaceted safety and security program.

Each lockdown drill is strategically planned and carried out with coordination and discipline by our Safety and Security Team, Rapid Response Team, and school leadership. These exercises are critical to maintaining a prepared campus.

Every member of our community has a responsibility in the process, and every response matters.

Immediate debriefing, observation reports, and video analysis ensure that lessons learned are applied quickly, strengthening our procedures and reinforcing a culture of vigilance and readiness.

Prior to the drill, nearly 20 pre-assigned team members were stationed throughout campus. This group included members of the Rapid Response Team, Safety and Security Team, administrative leaders, student interns, and other key personnel. Their responsibility was to observe, assess, and support as mentors and students responded to the announcement of a simulated threat.

When the call was made over the radio, mentors immediately activated our Emergency Response Plan, developed in alignment with nationwide best practices and affirmed by local, state, and federal safety experts. Mentors and students are trained regularly on these protocols and have shown a deep commitment to knowing and executing them well. Students responded promptly under mentor guidance, moving to secure locations or sheltering in place according to established procedures.

The Safety and Security Team remained in position until all classrooms were accounted for. Immediately following the drill, the team gathered in the courtyard for a comprehensive security debrief. Director of Security Steve Bryant received verbal reports from each team member, capturing immediate feedback while details were still fresh.

That feedback will now be combined with footage collected from two aerial drones deployed during the drill, along with recordings from our multi-point campus security camera system. This layered review allows us to fully assess response time, communication, and adherence to protocol.

Our goal is continuous improvement. Every drill provides valuable insight that helps us strengthen our response and better protect our students and staff.

- Steve Bryant, Director of Safety and Security

Several mentors asked Mr. Bryant to visit their classrooms after the drill to review performance and reinforce best practices with students. Those conversations are part of building a culture of readiness and shared responsibility.

All of the findings, footage, and feedback will be combined to inform ongoing refinements to our security procedures, as well as future mentor and student training.

The safety of our students remains our highest priority.

This drill reflects our commitment to preparation, accountability, and the careful stewardship of our campus community.
