HHCA Celebrates a Successful First Season of Girls on the Run

This fall, Hilton Head Christian Academy launched its first Girls on the Run team—and the inaugural season couldn’t have been more successful.

Thirty-five Lower School girls in 3rd–5th grade took part in the program, which is part of a nationwide initiative designed to nurture the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—through movement, meaningful conversations, and fun.

The evidence-based curriculum blends joyful, movement-based activities with thoughtful group discussions that build life skills, critical thinking, and emotional health. Each bi-weekly practice fostered belonging and acceptance, encouraging our girls to develop healthy habits, form lasting friendships, and set personal goals as they prepared for their season finale: a celebratory 5K run in Savannah.

The team met Mondays and Thursdays after school from September through November, before heading outside for stretches, strengthening exercises, endurance laps, and running games that kept each practice engaging and energizing. Throughout the season, the girls explored themes such as self-positivity, friendship, perseverance, and what it means to “pace yourself”—both in running and in life.

A highlight of the season for many of the girls was the encouragement they received from HHCA’s Cross Country Team, whose partnership added enthusiasm and motivation throughout the season.

Girls on the Run Practice with XC Team

The season concluded with the Celebration Run 5K at Lake Mayer Park in Savannah, where HHCA joined Girls on the Run teams from across the region. Nearly 30 HHCA runners lined up at the start, supported by enthusiastic parents, running buddies, teachers, and coaches. The race atmosphere was festive and fun—complete with Kona Ice, face painting, colorful hair spray, music from a local radio station, and a coffee truck for families and fans.

HHCA’s inaugural team was led by three dedicated coaches—Abby Hand, Tahnee Kudor, and Brooke Brown—who poured energy, encouragement, and heart into every practice. Four assistant coaches also played an essential role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for every girl. Several HHCA teachers—including Coach Birtcher, Madi Taylor, and Laura Mitchell—joined the girls on race day, running alongside them as they crossed the finish line.

From the first warm-up in September to the final triumphant strides across the 5K finish line, HHCA’s Girls on the Run team embodied confidence, kindness, endurance, and joy. Their smiles said it best: this was more than a club—it was a meaningful experience that built character, strengthened friendships, and created memories the girls will carry with them for years to come.

Congratulations to HHCA’s Girls on the Run team on a fantastic first season! We can’t wait to watch this program continue to grow in the years ahead.
