HHCA Students Shine as Delegates, Lobbyists and Leaders at Youth in Government Conference
HHCA Legislative Leaders Pass Bills, Earn Top Honors At Youth In Government (YIG) Conference
HHCA's 2023 YIG team was comprised of 21 students who have been working hard since September to draft bills and network with other delegates in order to get their bills signed during the 3-day, mock-legislative conference in Columbia, SC, held November 1-4, 2023.
While at the state capital, some of our students presided as government officials, others presented and defended their bills many times, while still more lobbied through extensive networking with other delegates in order to finally get their bills signed by their governor.
Three HHCA students served in leadership roles, presiding as government officials: Seniors Jack Mau and Claire Robbins, and Junior Christopher Nguyen.
Out of the hundreds of bills presented by students from around the state, none of the HHCA bills failed, which is a great accomplishment for the HHCA delegates.
Three bills presented by HHCA's YIG delegates (one authored by Mary Kathryn Lockhart and Alyssa Young and one authored by London Geyer, Caroline Thomas, and Annika Muthersbaugh) were signed into law. The third bill to pass, authored by Nicolas Panzarella and Ashton Tolerton, received an Outstanding Bill Award
HHCA lobbyist John Cameron Thomas won an Outstanding Lobbyist Award.
We are immensely proud of our YIG team and look forward to continuing our delegation in 2024.
