HHCA’s Upper School Commons has always been a place where students congregate throughout the day. HHCA opened The Coffee Bar in the Upper School Commons several weeks ago, and now it's as popular as ever. The new Coffee Bar, which offers excellent local coffee, ground fresh or served from a cold brew tap, is an updated version of a coffee bar students enjoyed several years ago on the Hilton Head Island campus.
Mr. Abbott and I worked over Christmas Break to build a beautiful coffee bar with the same technology you would see in a coffee shop. The Nitro cold brew on tap is amazing coffee. Our espresso machine is grinding fresh beans and making fresh coffee that the kids have loved so far. The coffee offered is on par with the drinks students could purchase at a Starbucks. But even more than a great cup of coffee, we're glad to see that The Coffee Bar provides a place for students to relax for a minute during the day and a place for mentors and students to connect.
- Jason Suddeth, Spiritual Life Director
HHCA’s Coffee Bar, staffed by the Spiritual Life team, is currently open about 70% of the day. Anytime the Spiritual Life team is not in class or a meeting, they can be found making coffee or visiting with students. Several students have already jumped in to help serve coffee. Within the next month, The Coffee Bar will be open all day.
The Spiritual Life team does most of the work to keep The Coffee Bar open, but the long-term vision is to increase student involvement. The goal is for students to gain experience running a start-up business, while also having an opportunity to serve their peers.
Profits from The Coffee Bar will support HHCA’s annual senior class mission trip to the Dominican Republic. The money raised will keep trip costs down for students and enable HHCA to give generously to the organizations the group works closely with in the Dominican.
